Appreciation of Robert Gene Soden, 1937 – 2019
Robert Gene Soden1937 – 2019
Decatur, Alabama, USA
The death occurred this year of a fine Soden, Robert Gene Soden from Decatur, Alabama with family origins in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
I knew Bob through family history and got to meet him for the first time when he and his gracious wife, Doris, visited us here in Ireland for the 1st Soden Reunion in June, 2000 in Sligo.
Bob and Doris stayed in Ireland for two weeks and they both toured the country. We would meet again in Toronto, Canada at a mini reunion in 2005.
This was long enough to get an estimate of the man personally. Bob was a Baptist Christian, enthusiastic in the practice of his religion. There was no malice or malevolence in Bob, he accepted things with an understanding that they exist and without making unkind remarks. He practised unassumingly his beliefs in a mild-mannered and unostentatious fashion.
Bob was particularly proud of his service in the Armed Air Force both in Europe and Vietnam.
He was enthusiastic about family history, very proud of his parents and brothers and their achievements. He had a great love also of his home town, Rocky Mount ,North Carolina and we had many cheerful and informative conversations on the few occasions we met and many times by phone.
It was our singular good fortune to have gotten to know Bob albeit for a short time and we are all the richer for that experience. Both Bob and Doris fulfilled our prejudice of Southern folk, as being gracious, well-mannered, cheerful and true, fine ambassadors for their states and country.
Requiescat in pace.

Account of the Early Soden branches in the USA [2020]
The Sodens of Baltimore, Maryland
African American Sodens:
Having come across several prominent Sodens who are black, I’ve explored origins.
Some run deep in American history as free persons of color.
Baltimore Sodens since Pre-1830s: Noting Ernest M. Soden III, currently CEO Modern Medical Products, Inc. an honored business.
Just one branch, beginning at least with William Soden, b. 1787 listed “Free Colored Person” with his family in the Baltimore MD area in the 1830 Census.
6 More Soden generations are easily traceable from Wm: Charles, b. 1819, Thomas H. b. 1849, Thomas b. 1883, Ernest Melvin, b. 1907, Ernest M. Jr b. 1930, Ernest M. III b. 1955, and Ernest M. IV b. abt. 2000 (a featured standout high school football player).
Boston/ NY/ Trinidad Sodens: Noting Richard Allan. Soden b. 1945, prominent in corporate law firm of Goodwin Proctor with ancestors: son of Dr. Hamilton Davis Soden, b. 1903 Trinidad, British West Indies, grandson of Cecil L. Soden, b. abt. 1876 Trinidad, great grandson of Richard Soden, b. abt. 1864 Trinidad.
Several Soden families in Canada and the US are traceable to Trinidad, included is a photo of the great-grandfather Richard Soden b. abt. 1864 who resided in Trinidad and Tobago as posted by a Canadian Soden descendant and a photo of Richard A. Soden, Of Counsel with the Boston law firm.
This information was sent to me by Glenn Soden, Columbus, Ohio January 2021. More information can be accessed on the Facebook page ‘My Last Name is Soden’.

PORTRAIT OF THOMAS BELDEN SODEN (1841 – 1918)
Thomas Belden Soden was born 15th March, 1841 in Otsego County, New York
Of British parents from Warwickshire, England. His father was Benjamin Soden
and his mother was Sophia Emery Soden.
He married Kate Rose Belden on 28th February , 1866 in Stroughton ,Wisconsin
And he died on 9th September , 1918.
They had 8 children :
Benjamin Lewis Soden
Elmina Alverda Soden Edmonds
Maude Kate Soden Dittmer McMullen Crosby
Thomas William Soden
Guy Belden Soden
Sylvia Ann Soden Horn
Sarah Subrina Soden Mathys
Rock Rollo Soden .
on the 9th September , 1957 his eldest daughter, Elmina Alverda
wrote the following poem about her father:
GRANDPA THOMAS SODEN
I had a Grandpa Soden whom I admired very much
Although at times, not long ago, he was the subject of talk and such.
Men thought he ran from the Civil War ? a slacker ? who never fought.
Not once did he defend himself, nor answer to such a taunt.
He stood all the ridicule and was tagged a “yellow” man,
But still he?d not defend himself – from gossip never ran.
Its sure he had some friends , but to him it didnt matter,
For by his quite nature he seldom engaged in chatter.
I loved my Grandpa dearly , not for his kind ways alone?
His voice in anger was never raised , never a surly tone.
We never heard him utter a word, his character to defend,
And he spent but little time with the few he called “my friend”.
He had traveled to California , Lincoln?s orders to complete;
Our history books skim through the facts of the gold shipment he helped defeat;
But never a word from Grandpa even when the war was done.
Our Union was saved from destruction but Gramps never carried a gun.
Never does his name appear for one courageous deed,
His Civil War activities were his constant , silent , creed.
You know by now that Grandpa was the “apple of my eye”,
It was only after his death we learned , he had been a Northern Spy.

American Civil War
It?s sure he had some friends , but to him it didn?t matter,
For by his quite nature he seldom engaged in chatter.
I loved my Grandpa dearly , not for his kind ways alone?
His voice in anger was never raised , never a surly tone.
We never heard him utter a word, his character to defend,
And he spent but little time with the few he called “my friend”.
He had traveled to California , Lincoln?s orders to complete;
Our history books skim through the facts of the gold shipment he helped defeat;
